Manaslu Tsum Valley Region
Manaslu Tsum Valley Region
Mt. Manaslu (the name behind the region) is the world’s eighth highest mountain (8156 m). The region is less traveled and less busy compared with other Himalayan trekking regions such as Everest or Annapurna. But it is nonetheless just as scenic and a great trekking region. The trek upwards the Manaslu region takes you back in time as you encounter cultures and lifestyles that haven’t changed much over time despite now having internet access. The people here are predominantly Buddhists and that is evident in the Buddhist monasteries and buildings across the region. The Manaslu region is a beautiful trekking destination and falls within the list of restricted zones, which is why travelers will need a special trekking permit to enter.

It is important to note that the region and their ethnicities mostly branch off into two domains: Nubri and Tsum. The two regions are separated by a range in between and also said to branch off at the Chhikur River. The people closest to the border are closer to Tibetan ethnicity, Bhotias, and most have adopted the surname of Lama. There is also a major population of Gurungs in the central hills.
